What Is a Sound Bath? Learn the Reasons to Try It for Yourself

Share

You arrive, find a comfortable place, and let someone else look after the sound. For the length of a sound bath, you have time set aside to listen and rest.

What is a sound bath?

A sound bath is a listening session led by a practitioner playing instruments such as crystal singing bowls, gongs, and chimes. Participants usually sit or lie down while the practitioner plays. The word “bath” describes being surrounded by sound.

You can come with no musical training or meditation experience. There is nothing to perform. You can listen with your eyes open or closed and adjust your position when you need to.

What happens during a session?

The practitioner introduces the session, makes space for everyone to get comfortable, and begins playing. The instruments and pacing vary with the facilitator and the class. Some sessions include spoken guidance or breathwork; check the class description for the format you are booking.

At OSO Sound Healing in Los Angeles, our sessions bring together crystal singing bowls, gongs, and other instruments. There are pauses between sounds, as well as passages where instruments are played together.

Why try a sound bath?

Time set aside for rest

A place on the calendar can make it easier to step away from work and the next thing asking for your attention. During the session, someone else holds the schedule.

A way into listening

You can follow one instrument, notice the spaces between sounds, or let your attention move around the room.

A chance to explore the instruments

Hearing bowls, gongs, and chimes in person gives you a chance to experience instruments you may only have seen in photographs. If something catches your attention, ask the facilitator about it after the session.

A shared experience

You can attend with a friend or come on your own. Everyone in the room is there to listen.

Before your first visit

Read the class description and arrival instructions when you book. Wear something comfortable, and allow time to settle in before the session starts. If you have questions about seating, access, or the volume of the instruments, contact us before your visit.

You can view upcoming sessions and booking details on our studio class schedule.
